Škoda - Elroq Paper Scissors

Bringing a physical game into the digital world using gesture recognition and 3d rendered hands.

Problem

Electric cars are booming business, with new models appearing at a rapid pace. So for the release of their new model "Elroq", Škoda Netherlands asked us to come up with an activation campaign that stands out.

Solution

Elroq paper scissors brings the classic hand game "Rock, Paper, Scissors" to the digital world. We targeted young adults through social & in-game ads, and invited them to join the battle. The grand prize: two years of free driving in a brand new Škoda Elroq.

Three AI-generated background arena's, five different 3d hand characters in five different skintones (including pure gold!) and webcam based game interactions. Combined  with an art direction that fused the worlds of street fighter, Mario-esque aesthetics and the grungy neon Elroq campaign. Pretty awesome design challenge, if you ask me.

The best thing about designing for this project? A wide variety of design challenges – many of them new to me personally. First we had to establishing a design style and art direction that unified several worlds. Then we designed the gameplay, user flows and in-game interactions - in which the player's input affected both UI elements and the 3d hands running in WebGL. Top that off with several layers of audio – background music, arena ambients and interaction SFX – for a real game experience. With a very short timespan to design and develop the game, I also worked very closely with our dev team to tackle new challenges as they arose.

Match gameplay: make your move using the webcam during the countdown, and wait for the grand reveal...
02
To quickly onboard users, we designed a signup/login flow using magic login links instead of passwords. After signing up, select your hand character, and game's on!

After the onboarding part, we forced users to rotate their device into landscape mode, for an optimal arcade fighter game experience.
